The varsity wrestling team ended its season placing twentieth out of 110 teams at the National Prep Tournament this weekend. Brandon Walker, Duke Pickett, Taylor Reuss, and Cary Jones represented Woodberry in this tournament, in which they competed against the best private school wrestlers in the country.
Cary Jones went 2-2 over the weekend against wrestlers who placed first and sixth at Nationals.
Freshman Brandon Walker finished one match away from placing in the tournament.
Taylor Reuss wrestled well, scoring some very tough wins to make it to the semi-finals. Because of a shoulder injury, he “injury defaulted” on the advice of medical trainers and finished in sixth place, but still earned the title of Prep All American.
Duke Picket wrestled well in a very tough weight class placing fourth and earning two-time Prep All- American honors.
Duke ended his Woodberry wrestling career with an overall record of 156 wins and 29 losses. He broke the record for most wins in a season with 48 wins this year. Duke also shattered an eight-year-old Woodberry record for consecutive dual meet wins. Previously the record was 30consecutive wins, but Duke tallied 44 consecutive wins over the past two seasons. He also broke the record for career wins, which previously stood at 134, with a new record of 156. Lastly, Duke posted 100 career pins, breaking the previous record of 95. Very impressive!
Please join us in congratulating all of the Tigers on their strong finish this season.

Tiger Wrestlers Place 3rd at State Tournament
The Tigers placed third in the State Wrestling Tournament this past weekend.
Woodberry placed eight wrestlers, with Taylor Reuss named champion in his weight class, earning All-State honors. Duke, Josh, and Cary all made the finals and placed second in their respective weight classes.
Josh, who was seeded fourth, upset the number-one seed in an exciting semi-final match that avenged an earlier loss to his opponent.
Brandon placed third and also avenged an earlier loss in the consolation finals.
Spencer and Rogers both placed fifth.
Israel, who was unseeded, placed sixth.
The overall team scores were very close — the Tigers finished only one point ahead of the fourth-place team and four points out of second place. Twelve out of fourteen Woodberry wrestlers scored team points at States, all contributing directly to our third-place finish.
The Tigers worked very hard this past weekend and represented Woodberry well with a very solid effort and performance. Please congratulate them when you see them.

Tigers Take 8th Out of 30 Teams at St. Albans
St. Albans
The Tigers placed eighth out of thirty teams at the St. Albans Tournament this past weekend, which is significant since we did not bring a full team. Five out of the seven Woodberry wrestlers who competed in the tournament placed in this tournament that featured some of the best private schools in the country including three teams that are ranked in the top ten in the nation.
Tigers place 5 out of 7 wrestlers
Duke and Taylor were both champions in very competitive weight classes. This marks the first time in over twenty years that the Tigers have had two champions in the same year at the St. Albans Tournament.
Two champs at St. Albans for the first time in at least 20 years
In the finals Duke wrestled David Wesley from St. Chris. Wesley was National Prep runner up last year and proved to be tough competition this year, but Duke wrestled well and won.
Taylor defeated a very tough wrestler, Adam Morris, from Wyoming Seminary in the finals.
Brandon, who was unseeded going into the tournament, wound up beating both the second and third seeded wrestlers and moving on to the finals where he continued to wrestle well and placed second.
Both Josh and Witt placed 8th.
This coming weekend the Tigers will be competing at States.
